Chinese Eco-Retreat Uses Perspective Distortion to Create a Surreal Guest Experience

 Cabin of Maze, a collaboration between Advanced Architecture Lab and Wiki World, is an innovative architectural retreat redefining space and human interaction. Located in Wuhan Ganlushan Culture Creativity City, this unique getaway seamlessly integrates solitude and communal living.

The design of Cabin of Maze challenges traditional floor plans by featuring 13 interconnected rooms, including bedrooms, living areas, and bathrooms, spread across a slender island. These spaces are linked by a 100-meter-long black corridor, which turns navigation into an adventure. The passageway’s unexpected turns, open-sky sections, and hidden courtyards create a sense of spatial disorientation, making exploration part of the experience.

Sustainability is a core principle of Cabin of Maze. Constructed using carbonized timber, the retreat blends harmoniously with its natural surroundings while reducing its carbon footprint. The elevated structure minimizes soil disruption, improves water drainage, and preserves the delicate ecosystem. Additionally, its modular construction allows for easy assembly and modifications, making it an adaptable and environmentally conscious tourism model.

The retreat also strikes a balance between privacy and social interaction. Flexible partitions in the corridor allow the space to be divided into five independent units, enabling guests to choose between solitude or shared experiences.
